IRS Transcript Frequently Asked Questions

IRS transcripts are official documents that summarize a taxpayer’s tax return information. They are created and maintained by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and are available to taxpayers and authorized third parties, such as tax professionals and financial institutions.

What are IRS Transcripts?

IRS transcripts are official records of a taxpayer’s tax return information. They contain a summary of the information that was included on a taxpayer’s tax return, such as income, deductions, credits, and payments. IRS transcripts are often used by taxpayers, tax professionals, and government agencies to verify a taxpayer’s income or tax status.

ASTPS has trained literally thousands of people on reading IRS transcripts. From those trainings we’ve compiled this list of frequently asked questions:

 

Can you please give us the Practitioner’s Priority line phone and fax number?

(866)860-4259 is the phone number. When you speak to a staff member they will provide you with the fax number as they differ depending upon what office across the country you are speaking too.

How many years back do IRS transcripts go?

Wage and income – 9 years, return transcripts 3 years, account transcripts 20+ years. You can see transcripts for any years that you put on your Form 8821 or 2848.

How can you request an ‘unmasked’ IRS transcript?

By calling Practitioners priority line, or through e-services.

Should you request transcripts on regular basis as a tax preparer?

If there are issues where the taxpayer does not have records, if there is a tax issue that requires monitoring, or if you are offering audit protection services transcripts are useful to monitor as well.

Do you know where we can get a list of the codes that appear on IRS transcripts?

Does asking for a transcript attract the attention of the IRS?

Requesting transcripts through E-Services does not. However, calling practitioners priority service may prompt the case to be reviewed and forwarded to collection in some cases.

Does IRS accept a fax that is sent through the computer using Fax Plus or EFax?

Yes they do

How do I obtain transcript for a deceased individual? 8821?

You can use an 2848 signed by the surviving spouse/executor/estate representative along with a form 56

What is the fastest way to get a 941 transcript?

If you want to verify filing, you can request an account transcript.

How do we check whether CAF has posted our 2848?

If you request transcript on e-services you will get a CAF check failed until the CAF unit processes the 8821 or 2848.

How long does it take to get the IRS transcript when requested?

After your 8821 or 2848 is posted, they are available instantly through e-services.

How do we get the TXMODA transcript?

The TXMODA is an internal IRS transcript. The only way to obtain one is by calling Practitioners Priority Service. They can either fax or mail you the TXMODA.

Any tips on obtaining transcripts for trusts?

You Contact Practitioner Priority if you are unable to get them in e-services.

Where on the transcript is it noted the prior balance(s) due?

The transcript shows a listing of all transactions in chronological order. It will show taxes assessed, payments, interest, penalties and other charges or credits. Does not show a running total, but the first page will show the current balance.

How do you get an IRS business transcript and what form for authority is required?

You can get business transcripts with form 8821 (gives you the authority to obtain transcripts). You can call practitioners priority line or get them by setting up an e-services account with the IRS.

How can you find out if an amended return was filed? Does it show if e-filed or paper filed?

A return received code will show up on the transcripts when the IRS gets the amendment. Then when the return is processed there will be an additional assessment which shows an adjustment to the tax based upon the amendment processing.

Can you see in the transcript when the collection statute of limitations will expire?

Yes, a TXMODA will show the collection statute end date. Some software like Pitbull Tax Software complies reports can also inform you on the collection statute.

Do taxpayers get notified if you received tax transcripts? Many clients worry when they receive any sort of notice and would be good to let them know they may receive something in the mail about it.

No, the taxpayer will not be notified if you pull transcripts, unless you are requesting an internal transcript which the IRS has to mail to the taxpayer rather than fax to you.

Do you need to list TXMODA on the Form 2848

No. The types of transcripts do not get listed on the form 2848, just the tax type, form and tax periods. So long as the TXMODA relates to one of those tax periods, you should be able to request this internal transcript by contacting the IRS Practitioner Priority Service telephone hotline.

What are the ASED, CSED, and RSED?

ASED Assessment statute expiration date (last date additional audit assessment can post) CSED Collection statute expiration date (last day IRS Can collect) RSED refund statute expiration date (last day taxpayer can get a refund).

Can I get an account transcript from a client, without a Power of Attorney? and If I get Power of Attorney, will the IRS only send me notices on behalf of client?

You can get the transcripts with a form 8821 and you can also check the box on there to get copies of client notices as well. The client will receive all notices, you will get copies of what they receive.

How many years of transcripts an individual can request from the IRS?

You can request as many transcripts as you want through e-services. By calling Practitioners Priority Service you can get up to 30 per client.

If you are representing a couple (filing MFJ) will I pull one transcript for the primary SSN or do I need a separate transcript each for both husband and wife?

For account or return transcripts you can get the documents with one of the SSNs. If you need wage and income you will need to get 8821 or 2848s for both of them.
